Sheff Wed & Millwall share spoils in topsy-turvy clash

Sheffield Wednesday spurned a golden chance to step up their play-off push as they were forced to settle for a 2-2 draw against Millwall at Hillsborough.

Substitute Gabriel Otegbayo spared the home side’s blushes with an 85th-minute equaliser just when it looked like the Lions had done enough to claim three improbable points.

Yan Valery fired the Owls into an early lead and they should have been out of sight as Ike Ugbo missed a penalty then three Wednesday players hit the woodwork before second-half goals from George Honeyman and Ryan Wintle nudged the visitors in front.

Alex Neil’s first away game in charge had got off to a nightmare start as Valery poked home a cross from Anthony Musaba to put the home side in front after just six minutes.

The visitors almost responded within three minutes as Japhet Tanganga had a firm header blocked in the box before Di’Shon Bernard booted a shot from Casper De Norre off the line.

Following their reprieve the Owls assumed almost total control, pummelling Millwall’s weak left flank and spurning a series of chances to increase their lead.

Shea Charles blazed a long-range effort over the bar, Musaba was denied by a timely block by Joe Bryan, then Ugbo shrugged off defender Murray Wallace but flashed his shot across the face of goal.

Wednesday should have doubled their lead just before the break when Bryan brought down Musaba in the box but Ugbo fired his penalty high and wide of target.

It was a similar story early in the second half as first Josh Windass rattled the underside of the bar, then, after the ball had been hacked off the line, Barry Bannan delivered an effort that rattled keeper Lukas Jensen’s left-hand post.

Millwall looked set to make Danny Rohl’s men pay for their misses when George Saville’s free-kick dribbled trough to Honeyman, who showed admirable poise to sweep the equaliser past James Beadle.

After Musaba had become the third Owls player to hit the woodwork, the Lions looked to completed a late turnaround when substitute Wintle bundled home the second after Romain Esse’s initial effort was blocked.

Otegbayo hauled Wednesday level almost immediately when he netted at the far post after a Windass flick-on, then Wintle had a free-kick saved by Beadle as the drama continued deep into injury time.
